L'ingegnere italiano Federico Faggin e gli americani Marcian Hoff e Stan Mazer realizzarono alla società statunitense INTEL- fondata da Noyce e Gordon Moore-il primo microprocessore. si tratta del primo circuito integrato che in una piastrina di silicio di 4 per 3 centrimetri può condensare, grazie a 2.250 transistor, una completa unità logica di un computer.
