Mod’n Roll 2012: The Theory of Everything.

Here Is where I made my choice.
I have been thinking about what to do to the case for a while.
I had 3 ideas, and I decided to go with the 3rd and most work-heavy one. This is of course also the idea that I'm sure would be the best looking!

But first is first. Sorry for the pics, but it's dark outside!
I pulled the hdd rack out, not gonna use that at all and it takes up loads of space:

A pic from the back, just to remember how the easy option would have looked!

Back taken out:

Dead mobo fitted for purpose of overlook. It'l be rotated 90 degrees, all ports facing down:

I'm still not sure how I'm going to do this, but I decided to just take it out and let time take it's course!

My main concern with this idea was the gap (or lack of thereof) between the audio/usb/lan and the PSU. But after measuring, it seems there's loads of room!

That's it for now, I'll be back soon!

nice nice nice , another pics

Bizarre choice the 90 rotated motherboard with ports downward... this mod arouses even more my curiosity!

Thanks man. I just wanted to do something a bit out of the normal on this case!
I just hope the result will be as great as the idea seems to be!

I really really hope you are right!
I'll do my best, that's for sure!
A small update on the fans!
I started out with 2 of the Phobya ones and that was easy peacy.

I then went on the the first Gelid. I started out in the lathe, and all of a sudden I heard a cracking noise. The fan housing stopped moving but the lathe kept going... I didn't use a chuck so I new the risk was there, and I therefore did it quite carefully.
After further inspection, I found out the housing was not the same... :wallbash:
The anoying thing is that one of the Gelid's ARE identical with the Phobya, but the second was not... And that's the one I was working on...
It's not cast in a single piece as such, but has "inserts" in the corners:

Actually the design of the back is not the same either, but I just didn't notice that!

This quite sucks, but for now I have 2 red and 2 blue.
If I need more I'll see what can be done.
I'm contemplating writing Gelid and ask if it's a mistake or if they changed the design, and I just got one of each.
I'm gonna tell them that I may have voided the warranty a bit though...
I'm gonna take a break from modding this week, but I'll be back next week with more updates!

really curious to see what will come out

Nice looking project...

about your mobo tray config... I manage to do the same thing in an ongoing project... here is the link Un1ty that will give you some ideas... my case was tiny compare to this one... but the main key is to relocate the PSU... cheers!

Thanks a lot! I'll be sure to take a good look at it!

I don't need to relocate the PSU though, I have enough room!

On with a small update.
I finally got around to doing the first part of the back of the case.
A couple og pieces of .5mm steel:

Fast spot-welded (Don't hate on it, it's good enough and I'll smooth it out. I never weld anymore! )

Now it's time for some bondo and a paint job, then the back should be done!

A little envelope of happiness arrived from MDPC:

Not much, but yet a small update!

Another small update for you today guys.
It's slow progress but I've never really modded a case before, so I'm taking it in little steps!

I don't know if anyone has anything bad to say about the Fractal cases, but one thing I presume I will never hear is "They used to few rivets!"
On with it!
I cut a bit off of the side of the MOBO backplate to make room for it:

Mounted at couple of pieces of aluminum angle. It has to be remounted somehow:

Testfit seems promising:

Unfortunately I have to remove a bit of the dvd-cage. (Beautifuly marked in red)

So that's it for now. I'll get the cage done tomorrow, and then it's on to the next thing!

I think you have also to make new hole for cable management...
Anyway, as I presumed this rotated motherboard tray is e vary challenging and interesting feature.

I don't know where that should be needed, but you may have spotted something that I have missed!

Yeah, it is quite challenging! I kinda like it!
I feel the result might actually turn out the way I want it to!

Yet another small update!
I cut the drive bay:

And then mounted it in it's original place with screws for now.
I got the damn moboplate in and mounted with 3 screws for now. No need to put in rivets when I'm pretty sure I'll have to pull it several more times!
It's a small thing, but it finally feels like I made some progress!

Now I can get on with thinking up how the internals will look in the end!

From the back:

Now I need to cut a bit more off of it, that should be done tomorrow!
C ya then my fellow modders!

I was thinking to CPU power and to external peripherals (as now you have them in the bottom of the motherboard tray). But maybe you were thinking to another solution...I'll be waiting for it.

I'm amazed about all the thing you'r doin man... it's just.. oh crap.. just unbelievable! I just love the WB you made! Wow
congrats mate! I'll keep an eye on this mod for sure!

You are very right, and I stand corrected!

I'll have to find a way to get the 8 pin in there somehow!
