Il K8L utilizzerà così il Socket AM2+ anzichè l'AM3, secondo i produttori taiwanesi.La differenza tra il Socket AM2 e il Socket AM2+ risiede nell'adozione del bus HyperTransport 3.0 anzichè dell'HyperTransport 1.0. Le CPU Socket AM3 saranno compatibili con le schede madri Socket AM2 e Socket AM3, tuttavia le motherboard AM3 non potranno ospitare CPU AMD AM2. In conseguenza di tutto questo, AMD ha rinviato l'adozione delle DDR3 a metà 2008, quando il primo processore Socket AM3 sarà prodotto a 45 nm.Le gli sviluppi saranno questi, Intel potrebbe avere il coltello dalla parte del manico per diverso tempo, in vantaggio sia sui quad-core che sul processo produttivo (nonchè sull'adozione delle DDR3).
