In occasione del proprio IDF (IntelDeveloper Forum), evento che si sta svolgendo a San Francisco, Intel ha mostrato una nuova piattaforma per utenti enthusiast top di gamma, dotata di due processori quad core e di configurazione video multi GPU. SkullTrail è il nome scelto per questa piattaforma, caratterizzata dall'utilizzo di due processori a 45 nanometri della famiglia Penryn, ciascuno dotato di architettura quad core, con 4 Slot PCI Express 2.0 16x (configurati con connessioni 8x elettriche se utilizzati contemporaneamente) e supporto a configurazioni multi GPU. Questa piattaforma enthusiast è stata mostrata da Intel in occasione del proprio Developer Forum Spring 2007, tenutosi ad mese di Aprile a Pechino nel mese scorso. La più importante novità mostrata in questa occasione è stata il supporto alla tecnologia SLI di NVIDIA. Il produttore americano sembra aver concesso supporto alla propria tecnologia SLI per configurazioni multi GPU per questa nuova piattaforma Intel, non allargando tuttavia la compatibilità anche alle piattaforme chipset X38 di prossima presentazione sul mercato. La nuova soluzione SkullTrail continua ad utilizzare memorie Fully Buffered Dimm al posto di quelle DDR3, oppure anche solo di quelle DDR2 unbuffered. Questo conferma che tale piattaforma sia stata derivata da una della famiglia Xeon DP, infatti è abbinata a questa tecnologia di memoria di largo utilizzo nelle piattaforme server e workstation ma che attualmente non è in grado di offrire livelli di flessibilità, in termini di timings e di tolleranza all'overclock, richiesto per una piattaforma che voglia definirsi per utenti enthusiast. Finalmente Microsoft ha rilasciato un bug fix per i sistemi operativi Windows XP sia Home che Professional Edition, versioni a 32bit, che risolve i problemi di consumo eccessivo delle batterie dei notebook, verificatisi nel momento in cui al notebbk viene collegata una periferica USB. Di fatto, questo bug impedisce al processore di abilitare le modalità di sospensione a più ridotto consumo, noti come C3 e C4, forzando uno stadio a più elevato consumo e quindi riducendo l'autonomia complessiva. Di seguito le note che spiegano come operi il bug del sistema operativo: SYMPTOMS When you unplug the AC power from a Microsoft Windows XP-based portable computer, the battery may drain more quickly than you expect. Therefore, the operating system may shut down prematurely. CAUSE This problem may occur if one of the following conditions is true: • The portable computer cannot enter the deeper Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) processor idle sleep states. This occurs when the USB 2.0 driver leaves the asynchronous scheduler component running continuously. This prevents the processor from entering the deeper ACPI processor idle sleep states, or C-states. C-states save power when the processor is not busy. These states range from C0 to C3 or C4. Typically, an idle portable computer uses the C3 and C4 states to preserve battery power. If an idle portable computer cannot enter or maintain the C3 or C4 states, the battery power drains more quickly. This problem is fixed by installing the download that is available in this article. • The USB host controller is unable to turn off. This typically occurs when devices are removed from a nested USB hub that is attached to the host controller. The host controller does not recognize the device removal. Therefore, the controller is never turned off. This prevents the processor from entering the ACPI processor idle sleep states. This problem is not fixed by installing the download that is available in this article. • The USB host controller uses the periodic scheduler for USB 2.0 devices. This typically occurs when devices that rely on the periodic scheduler are attached to the host controller. These may be isochronous (Isoch) devices such as audio devices. Alternatively, they may be interrupt devices such as mouse or keyboard.
